AMIREH (Hiam Abbass), the headstrong matriarch of a British-Iranian immigrant family has been given only a few months to live. In dealing with her imminent demise, she seeks the help of an idealistic new-age psychiatrist who introduces her to Psilocybin (magic mushrooms) as a means of dealing with her depression. She opens up to a path of spirituality and makes the decision to free herself of the material world, designing her own death ceremony by involving the hallucinogenic drug DMT.

 

Her over-the-top and conservative Persian husband SOL (F Murray Abraham), who is in his own world and in complete denial about his wife’s mortality, finds the idea humiliating and preposterous. An argument erupts resulting in threats of divorce, culminating in Amireh leaving her bewildered husband. After a few days and without news from his wife, Sol visits their son DANNY (Emun Elliott), informing him that his mother has gone missing. He adamantly walks the path of denial, keeping mum about Amireh’s terminal disease and her reasons for leaving him.

 

Danny, who is recently married to TERRI (Sarah Snook), an American whom Sol largely sees as an imposter, dismisses his father and chalks up his mother’s disappearance as the result of Sol’s chronicled infidelities. But soon the police inform they have located a body and a murder investigation ensues with Sol becoming the key suspect in question. Left in the dark and grief-stricken, Danny must contend with the police, his father’s lies, his quarrelling wife, and his entitled baby sister YASMINE, who has just returned from Uni.
